According to Statistic Brain’s research with Online/Direct Response Mail on 9 January, 2018 out of the people who set New Year resolutions only 9.2% of people felt they were successful in achieving them. Another interesting statistic is that 42% of Americans say they absolutely never make New Year’s resolutions. Wow – absolutely never – they are strong words. This means that over half the population make New Year's resolutions. The most popular resolution is to lose weight, followed by things like enjoying life more, living more fully or spending less. Any of these resolutions may be yours or yours may be completely different. However, the chances of success with a New Year's resolution are pretty slim. Before talking about the strategy and my own success story, I would like to think for a moment about why New Year's resolutions fail. Here are a few possible reasons:

·         The resolution is made without deep consideration.

·         The resolution is too broad.

·         The resolution is too vague.

·         The resolution doesn't challenge you.

·         The resolution doesn't allow you to make strategies to achieve it.

·         The resolution is something you feel you should do, rather than something you want to do.

·         The resolution doesn't mean something to you spiritually.

·         The resolution isn't the right or most important thing for  you right now.

·         The resolution doesn't take priority over your other commitments.

All these reasons together or some of them, as well as other reasons, can mean that your New Year's resolution would not be seen through until the end, as an 8% success rate was a very low one. It's very likely that your New Year's resolution is not going to succeed. Maybe you already knew this from experience or worried that it would not be enough. But the fact that New Year's resolutions aren't successful doesn't mean you should be giving up on your goals. What's important is to find a more effective way to make them come true. I would like to share my story about New Year's resolutions and goals.

I, of course, had goals that I wanted to realize. At first, the idea of a New Year's resolution appealed to me – starting a new year with a new goal is very neat and feels very organized. However, I found that it wasn't a method that was working for me. I grew frustrated.

Later on, when I was working on my own method of achieving goals, I found that many of my clients felt the same way. They found New Year's resolutions a failed method to achieve their goals. Many of them were skeptical to the idea of setting goals even through a different method. So, I knew that I needed a new strategy for myself and my clients. The strategy I developed was the ONE Commitment.

The ONE Commitment is a year-long commitment to one thing. It involves a deep and responsible commitment to ONE right word or theme that you choose. This word or phrase can be anything – I have chosen 'Thankful (2014)', 'Epic (2015)', 'Discipline (2016)', 'Finish' (2017) 'Abundance' (2019), 'Surrender' (2019), 'Activate' (2020), and in 2021 my ONE Commitment word/theme is Courage.  Over the last 8 years I have had clients who have chosen words like 'Fun', 'Uncomfortable', 'Happy Wife, Happy Life', 'Unstoppable', 'Devotion', among many others. Some have chosen acronyms or phrases as well.

The first time I did the challenge, I chose the word 'Thankful'. It happened during a trying time in my life, when I had just moved to Australia with my family. We were all adjusting, and I was just starting to work in a new country. I figured that a good word for me would be something like 'Strength,' 'Determination', 'Drive' or 'Fortitude', but while those words resonated with me on an intellectual level, they did not resonate spiritually. After much soul-searching, the right word – 'Thankful' – came to me. I decided to try it out and the results were amazing.

I felt a deep change in my life by committing to being thankful for a whole year. I felt how my perspective changes and how others also could see and appreciate what I was doing. It did a lot to improve my life and my relationships. As I implemented new strategies each week, I could see what a profound effect the commitment and the theme of 'Thankful' had in my life. It was nothing like a New Year resolution that would be forgotten by the end of January. It was a real, tangible and deep change.

Committing to one thing helped me prioritize and give my vow a place in my life. It allowed me to achieve a change that was apparent in many aspects of my life – my relationships, my work and my daily routine, for instance.

If you have found your New Year's resolution not becoming reality, you may feel discouraged, especially if it's something that has happened year after year. However, the method of making resolutions doesn't work for most people (a 90.8%!), so it's not a matter of using this method better, but of finding a method that works for you and that allows you to make a real change in your life. The ONE commitment may be just the tool you are looking for to make a change in your life. It is a fully personalized method that allows you to choose the truly matters to you and work with something that may be causing you pain or discomfort. This commitment can help you grow and challenge yourself, developing the aspects of yourself you want to develop.
